The Claude Leon Foundation

The Trustess of the Claude Leon Foundation have established post-doctoral fellowships in Science, Engineering and Medical Science at South African universities. The fellowships will be available from January 2008 for two (2) years and are valued at R125 000 per annum.

National Research Foundation (NRF) Postdoctoral scholarships and fellowships

The Department: Research Capacity Development (RCD) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) offers financial support to postdoctoral students. Two types of complementary support are provided:

  1. Free-standing scholarships and fellowships which will be awarded, on a competitive basis, directly to students undertaking full-time study and part-time study in the case of disabled students. Students must apply for these awards themselves, and remain responsible for the submission of all required documentation.
  2. Grant-holder linked assistantships and bursaries which will be granted to researchers within their NRF support packages and may be awarded to students selected by NRF grant-holders linked to their research plans. Grant applications mustbe made by the researchers inthe respective NRF Focus Area programmes or Research Capacity Development programmes.
  1. Categories of Free-standing student support

    A limited number of scholarships will be awarded for post-doctoral studies to top achievers in their research fields, for academic performance as well as their research potential. Student support for scholarships is limited to South African citizens unless specified otherwise. Student support for bursaries are extended to South African citizens and permanent residents

    The following free-standing student support in the natural, social and human sciences, engineering and technology is offered:

    • DoL Scarce Skills Scholarships for postdoctoral fellowships for research in South Africa
    • DoL Scarce Skills Scholarships for postdoctoral fellowships for research in South Africa for students with disabilities
    • Free-standing innovation postdoctoral fellowships for research in South Africa for South African citizens only
    • Postdoctoral fellowships for research, either in South Africa or abroad
    • African Scholarships and Fellowships for full-time postdoctoral study and research for African students and fellows from SADEC region countries only.

  2. Categories of Grant-holder-linked student support

    Grant-holder-linked bursaries are made available to NRF grant-holders within their support packages for allocation to masters and doctoral students, as well as post-doctoral scholars of their choice in accordance with NRF guidelines. Student assistantships are available to grant-holders within their support packages for allocation to black, South African, honours/BTech final year students or black, South African students in their final year of undergraduate study. Grant-holder linked support is intended to support the best postgraduate students linked to the grant-holder’s research plan. The period of student support for postdoctoral research is 2 years.

    Note that postdoctoral fellowships for research in South Africa are open to any nationality and thatpostdoctoral fellowships for research abroad, and innovation postdoctoral fellowships for research in South Africa are is restricted to South African citizens.
